Traditional style water heaters are referred to as tank water heaters. They provide a large volume of hot water using propane, natural gas or electricity. Residential tank water heaters typically store between 40 and 80 gallons of hot water. The temperature can be adjusted by a controller on the outside of the unit. Tank water heaters are typically located in the garage or basement. They are the most common way to heat water in the United States.

Water heaters can leak or stop working when they become old or broken. It is important to know the age, make and model of your water heater.
